Synopsis (courtesy of Dreamworks):

Rise of the Guardians is an epic adventure that tells the story of a group of heroes – each with extraordinary abilities. When an evil spirit known as Pitch lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world.

“Man! Santa and that sleigh are bad-ass!” That was my prevailing thought as I was absorbed into this wondrous, crisp, sharp, exquisitely animated Dreamworks drama Rise of the Guardians. When you take Santa, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, Sandman and a reluctant Jack Frost under the auspices of Old Man Moon and pit them against Pitch (the Boogey Man) you get this wild, amazing Avengers-like team-up of iconic, storybook characters and a so far, hugely underrated ‘marvel’ of a film. It’s a classic good -vs- evil story of the Guardians fighting Pitch for control of the hearts and minds of children worldwide. The storied characters are fascinating with their own origins and agendas and the ultimate themes speak to intangibles like faith, wonder and dreams. The only drawback is that despite it’s well-written, well-thought out, wide-ranging characters, is that it truly has a distinct Christmas holiday feel and it may have been a marketing misfire to have sent this film out against the hordes of Twilight fans who’ve clearly, edged it out of it’s rightfully deserved top spot of the box office. Family audiences are typically an under-served market and projects like this are destined to be timeless classics to viewed and enjoyed by ALL ages year after year at gatherings. Catch it on the big screen while you can because Rise of the Guardians is as great as any Pixar or Disney film at their best.

My grade: A+
