Oh, gee. I got such a kick out of reading my Facebook newsfeed this AM from the disgruntled people out there. There are just 3 comments I can’t help but address though (for my own amusement):

(1)    LIONS AND TIGERS AND SOCIALISM, OH MY!  I read at least 20 comments from people who believe the US is apparently now a “socialist” country: no – simply, no. Aside from petroleum exporting economies, the US has one of the highest rates of wealth concentration (and thus lowest redistribution) amongst developed economies. Check the World Bank data if you don’t believe me.  And the most glaring rebuttal to this assertion of a socialistic US is just a basic understanding of the different macroeconomic systems. It’ll take a 5-minute read of Wikipedia to understand first what socialism is; then a 5-min read on capitalism, which will lead to the deduction that we are one of the most capitalist countries on earth.

(2)    CANADA, THE LAND FLOWING WITH MILK AND HONEY.  This next one is my absolute personal fave: “I’m disgusted! I want to move to Canada now!” By all means, please do so! You may, however, want to be pre-warned that Canada has universal healthcare (cringe), legal same sex marriage (ewww), much stricter gun control (double cringe), much stricter environmental regulations (WTF) , oh, the list could go on. In fact, as you consider your list of countries to relocate to, good luck in finding a developed Western country that does not offer universal healthcare or has a lower top tax rate on income. (What was that? There isn’t one?! Shocking.)

(3)    TAXES, TAXES, TAXES. “Now we’re all going to be taxed more!”   Here’s a quick checklist to run thru: (i) Do I manage a large stock or real estate portfolio, thus generating most of my income from capital gains? (ii) Do I work in private equity, deriving profits from carried interest? (iii) Do I make ~$250k+ per annum?  (iv) Will I inherit a huge sum of wealth from my ‘rents someday? Unless you answered yes to any of these: chill out, dude. Obama has proposed things like raising taxes (eg, rolling off the tax cuts in Q1’13, which had been implemented during the GW Bush administration, otherwise known as part of the upcoming ‘fiscal cliff’) for those making $250k or above.  Unless you’re rollin’ in the dough, why bother getting your socks in a ball?

While I do get immense pleasure from hearing everyone bemoan the state of the US for their children in this scary new world, I’d really enjoy someone giving me something deeper to think about when I critically view my president.  NO ONE is perfect; so yes, let’s cast a critical eye to our leaders and push for improvement. But some of this nonsense that people currently believe? Marketing soundbites, which lead to bad decision-making.

But otherwise, enjoy Canada!

Thanks, Vania! Nice to know there are still a few people out there with educated opinions and common sense 🙂

Seriously though, I’d love to move to Norway. Faster broadband, more education, better pay, better quality of life.

Gah! No! Stop encouraging them to move here!

I wish all the people citing Rand would stop as well; it’s such a stunted philosophy and unrealistic. They can enjoy their bitter lives. Btw, I haven’t received any texts from you.

If you’re rolling in the dough or making more than $250k, you don’t really have any reason to get your socks in a ball either. You’re richer than 99% of the rest of the country even after taxes increase.

While I agree that running to Canada to escape what some perceive as a more leftward tilt in American politics is just silly, I disagree with the above comment that Rand’s philosophy is stunted and unrealistic. Not to begin a debate, but I think Rand would be largely in favor of progressive social issues such as the right to marry whomever you want regardless of sexual orientation, or a woman’s right to choose whether or not she wants to give birth to her unborn child. I do think, however, that applying her philosophy to fiscal issues would severely curb government spending, balance the budget, reduce the deficit, and set the conditions for a thriving market as opposed to government bailouts. Unfortunately, neither the democrats nor the republicans have figured out how to stop spending money and growing government. Times may need to get worse before we realize that there are more than just blue and red alternatives.

The Canada Comments crack me up. If they only would educate themselves. My Neighbor a strict Mormon she would even vote for Obama Because he has similar views to how things are done in Canada where she was born and Raised.

My personal favourite is: “Ppl who are threatening to move to Canada b/c Obama won, that’s like saying, ‘I hate Asians, I’m moving to China.”

But if in moving to China, I get to run over a bunch of Asians in my car, then it would make sense.
